Yeehaww!! 🤠 Is this Arizona?? Nope! 🗾 It's Mount Aso in Kumamoto prefecture! There's a bunch of semi-feral horses 🐎 🐎 🐎 that roam this range on the side of this active volcano!! 🌋 🤘

I had no idea places like this could be found in Japan! I thought I was half expecting to see some cowboys or maybe Riders of Rohan! I have to say the smell of pony loaf 💩 reminded me of Arizona 😂

Back in Autumn, I had the pleasure of visiting Hir

Back in Autumn, I had the pleasure of visiting Hiraodai #平尾台 Limestone Plateau! It's only about 40 mins away from Downtown Kokura and it has some incredible sights. These limestone boulders litter the top of this mountain area and, in the Fall, are surrounded by these beautiful tall grasses.

I've heard that one should visit here often to see the changes from season to season, I'm looking forward to another trip there soon!

🚝 Part of my commute is riding the Kitakyushu Monorail, and it's a small pleasure that I get to enjoy before and after work. 🚝 It comes every ten minutes, and it gives riders a bird's eye view over downtown Kokura. 🚝 This forward facing window usually has kids with their parents looking into the conductor's cabin, but the kid in me likes to watch over the conductors as they push their buttons and pull their levers when I have the chance 🚝 This video shows the short run between Heiwadori and Kokura Stations. 🚝

Back at the beginning of November, there was a spe

Back at the beginning of November, there was a special event at Kokura Castle 🏯 called the Take Akari, 竹灯り, where the castle grounds are host to a huge installation of bamboo candle art. 🎍 There were thousands and thousands of candles these beautiful candles set up, each with a real flame candle inside, that were all painstaking lit one by one by the staff every night! Some were plain and some had patterns and designs cut into them. Apparently it's a yearly exhibit! I'm already excited to go again this year!

Just a few video clips from 2023! And what a year it has been! It started out with teaching high school Physics and making plotter art and lasercutting woodworking projects in Tucson, AZ. Then, in April, I moved to Kitakyushu, Japan, where I'm now teaching English and practicing photography. It's been a huge transition with lots of ups and downs, but I'm grateful to everyone who has supported me during this last year. I'm thankful to have the ability to move across the world and experience so many incredible sights and sounds.

A few weeks ago I met up with some volunteer models who let me practice my portrait photography skills. Meet Remi! He's a programmer from France currently staying in Fukuoka! He said he wanted to try something out of the ordinary while in Japan and let me take photos of him in various areas of the Tenjin underground. We originally planned for an outdoor shoot but the summer rains forced us to try something else. Here's a few shots from our shoot!

As a newbie to shooting with models, I'm still trying to see how to work with people and get their best look! I'd love to know which one of these photos you all like the most! Let me know!

This is the last of my favorite lilly photos but I absolutely love this orange color! It looks like the lily version of a orange creamsicle! I wanted to take a bite!

Here's one last set of fun facts about Lillies, " Lilies have been a prominent symbol throughout history. One of the first records of this flower dates back to the Minoan Period (around 1580 B.C.), when it appears in a painting found in Crete, Greece. Even the Ancient Greeks held this flower dear, as they believed lilies sprouted from the milk of Hera, the Queen of the Gods. Roman mythology claimed that Venus, the goddess of beauty, envied the flower’s beauty, which caused it to grow the pistil in the center. Ancient Egyptians saw the power of this flower as well, as they included lilies in the funeral ceremonies for mummies."

Being in Kokura is such a delight as I get to witness the breathtaking Kokura Castle nearly every single day! When I'm out strolling or jogging, the sheer magnificence of this place never fails to leave me awestruck. It's an enchanting sight, with the medieval castle gracefully standing alongside towering apartments and the bustling city hall. The perfect blend of ancient and modern Japan creates an incredible juxtaposition that never fails to captivate my heart. Truly, Kokura Castle is a treasure! 🌸✨

Lilies are found all around the world! Many are native to Asia, including Japan. The lily is known at Yuri -百合 (ゆり) in Japanese. It's bulbs are called Yuri-ne, and while lilies are toxic to our feline friends, they are found in various Chinese and Japanese cuisine. Yuri-ne can be found in chawan-mushi, a popular savory egg custard ✨

While researching this week,
I've really come to appreciate
the lovely Ajisai more and more. It's so nice to see their beautiful flashes of color through the rainy season. 🌧️

I've heard that in the modern time we live in, more and more people suffer from Plant Awareness Disparity or "plant blindness," what's known as the inability to see or notice plant's in one's own environment. This ends up affecting now much conservation and research goes into plants. I read that plants make up 57% of the endangered species list! 🌱🌿🍃

While the beloved hydrangea is not endangered, I hope that you can take a moment to think about the plants you see around you everyday and see if you can get to know them and share it with someone 🙂

This one is super easy to identify! It's a Mophead Hydrangea! 🤣 And no, I'm not joking! That's an actual Hydrangea type! Although "snowball" could be good name too 🙂

The rains here have been relentless! 🌧️ ☔ I've received text alerts warning of mudslides and the nearby emergency siren 🚨 went off warning of heavy rain and rising river levels! 😮

I thought Tucson summer monsoons were intense but these Japanese rainy season deluges are something else! This desert dweller is shook! 😂
